Welcome to the latest edition of The Beacon

Dear Parents and Carers

As we come to the end of another academic year, I want to take a moment to reflect on what has been a remarkable twelve months across Lighthouse Schools Partnership. This year has brought its share of challenges, but more importantly, it has been filled with achievements and inspiring stories from our pupils and staff. This edition of The Beacon celebrates some of the activities and achievements across our Trust over the past academic year and the milestones we’ve reached.

One key milestone for us this year is the creation of our Bristol Hub when three new schools joined us in January 2025. We are expecting Horfield CofE Primary School to join us on 1 August 2025. We are now a mature multi-academy trust of 33 schools, 12,000 pupils and nearly 1500 staff!

A lot of work undertaken this year has been ensuring that we are as efficient and effective as possible. As many of you will know, schools across the country are facing increasing financial pressures, and our Trust is no exception. Rising costs and limited funding mean that budgets are tighter than ever. In response, we are looking carefully at how we use our resources and exploring more agile and innovative ways of working. This may involve changes in how we deliver some services, and we will have to continue looking at this over the coming academic year. Our priority remains the same: to provide the best possible education and support for your children. We are confident we can continue to do just that and will welcome your commitment and understanding as we continue to navigate through this difficult situation.

I do hope you will enjoy reading the articles below. I am immensely proud of the dedication shown by our staff, and the resilience and enthusiasm of our students. I also want to take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support from you - our parents and carers.

Together, we can create environments where our children and young people can flourish.

Dr Gary Lewis, Chief Executive Officer

LSP STAFF CONFERENCE

Advancing Equity, Unlocking Potential

{item_alt_tag}

This year marked a significant milestone with our first cross-trust INSET day, bringing together 1,000 teachers and support staff from all 33 of our schools. The day was centred on our strategic aim: ensuring the very best outcomes for every pupil in every school – Advancing Equity, Unlocking Potential.

The morning focused on understanding the educational challenges in our region, with insights from a range of local and national experts, including former Mayor of Bristol, Lord Marvin Rees.

In the afternoon, we connected internationally as Doug Lemov and Hannah Solomon from the Teach Like a Champion team joined us live (via Teams!)  from the US. Their session delved into developing classroom provision and refining teaching preparation.

The day was a powerful opportunity to work together across all schools and phases, with a clear focus on cohesion and how this benefits our pupils. The training created a shared language and collective expectations which we are now seeing reflected in our classrooms. Our staff have shown clear determination to advance equity and unlock every child’s potential.

HOME-SCHOOL PARTNERSHIP

{item_alt_tag}

At Lighthouse Schools Partnership, we believe that children and young people flourish in their education when schools and families work together with mutual respect, open communication, and a shared commitment to nurturing every child’s potential. We value positive, professional relationships with our families and have formalised our processes, and expectations, in our home-school partnership.

Our home-school partnership outlines the commitments we make as a trust of schools to you as parents/carers as well as the support and engagement we need from yourselves to ensure our shared purpose of happy and successful children can happen.

These expectations apply to all schools and their stakeholders within Lighthouse Schools Partnership.

YATTON REBUILD UPDATE

{item_alt_tag}

Work is ongoing to rebuild Yatton Infant School following the fire that happened in May 2023. The rebuild process has provided a great chance for pupils to learn and feel a part of the ongoing construction work - and their new school building. The teams involved have taken the opportunity to help to engage pupils minds in what construction involves, and introduced them to different career paths.

Katie Corbett, from Bray Slaughter, shares how Yatton Infant School pupils have been involved in the journey so far:

"We believe it’s important that the children are kept informed and engaged with the progress of their new school being built. This helps to build a sense of excitement and curiosity, while also giving them the chance to learn about the construction process, the materials being used, and the many different roles involved in the project."

The building work is currently on schedule to be completed towards the start of 2025/26, and we are pleased to be able to share some photos of the build progress and pupils visits!

BBC POINTS WEST VISIT EASTON CE PRIMARY SCHOOL TO DISCUSS APPLYING TO BECOME SCHOOL OF SANCTUARY

{item_alt_tag}

In March, Easton CE Primary was featured on BBC Points West, in a wonderful heart-warming story covering the school applying for Sanctuary Status for refugees.

A School of Sanctuary is a school that has received recognition of its good practice in fostering a culture of welcome, belonging and solidarity for those seeking safety. Once approved, Easton CE Primary School will join LSP schools Blagdon Primary School and St Mary Redcliffe CE Primary School who have both been awarded Schools of Sanctuary.

The feature looked at all the incredible work the school are doing, as part of becoming a School of Sanctuary, in order to help refugee children feel welcome and supported as they adjust to life in the UK.

The BBC piece was an excellent example of how the school is living their values "Being different. Belonging together".

{item_alt_tag}

Clare Welbourne, Headteacher from Easton CE Primary School said:

"Lots of our families have had to make difficult journeys from quite dangerous parts of the world. Some of them had professional jobs, nice houses in other parts of the world, but because of situations involving war or danger, they have had to leave those places and come here and live in much less good situations. But those families are still aspirational for their children."

MOBILE PHONE RESEARCH

In our January edition of The Beacon we informed you all that a number of schools would be undertaking research with the University of the West of England (UWE) into pupil and parent views on the impacts and benefits of smartphones. Thank you to all those who took part in surveys. UWE are currently looking at the data, and we will see if we can widen this across more LSP schools.

Gordano School introduced a new phone-free policy for students in Years 7 to 11 in June 2025. The initiative, which uses secure magnetic-lock pouches from Yondr, aims to limit the negative impact of mobile phones and social media on young people’s cognitive, emotional, and social development. You can read more about this here.

All of our schools have expectations in place, which means that pupils should not be using smart devices on the school site, and this will continue.

Decisions about smartphones are ultimately ones that belong to parents, but we will update our parents and carers further, in time, regarding this important cultural situation and our position on mobile phone usage by children and young people.

LSP SECONDARY SCHOOLS JOIN TOGETHER FOR YOUNG LEADERS' CONFERENCE 2025

{item_alt_tag}

On Thursday 13 February, students from across Lighthouse Schools Partnership joined together at Chew Valley School for this year's LSP Young Leaders Conference. The event saw each of the four secondary schools in the trust send a team of students to present about leadership within their setting. With close to 80 students in attendance, the atmosphere was already building in a positive manner, assisted by fabulous catering from the team at Aspens, who produced some wonderful food for the students on arrival.

Ben Stirling-Turner, Assistant Headteacher at Chew Valley School: “Having been involved in three conferences thus far, it was a privilege to see the work that each school is undertaking around student leadership. In fairness, it is mostly all around the students and their drive, enthusiasm and central positions as role models and inspirational figures that truly display high quality leadership in their schools. It is important to celebrate the impact that young people have within their communities and to celebrate this in the right manner. It was a fantastic afternoon and we are already looking forward to next year’s conference!”

Thank you to all those who contributed to the day, and to Chew Valley School for hosting the successful event!

NEWS FROM OUR SCHOOLS

EXCITING NEW SPORTS FACILITY FOR BACKWELL SCHOOL

{item_alt_tag}

Planning permission has been granted for a brand new 3G pitch at Backwell School.

Whilst the school already has a great range of sports facilities, including vast fields, tennis courts and sports halls for pupils a pitch, that can be used in all weathers, is something that has been on the school’s wish list for the past 20 years or so.

Finally, following funding from the football foundation, local sports clubs and North Somerset Council, a 3G pitch will be built on the school site. It should take around 12 weeks to construct and we hope this will be completed by the end of this calendar year.

Mark Middleton, Backwell Hub Estates Lead: “This is amazing news for Backwell School. It is an essential resource for pupils, giving them an additional specialised PE space to use, especially in winter. It will also be available for hire to the community outside of school hours so local groups can make the most of our new pitch, We are really excited for the building work to begin to get this project underway.”

SADIK AL-HASSAN MP VISITS GORDANO SCHOOL TO DISCUSS SEND CHALLENGES

{item_alt_tag}

In March, Gordano School welcomed Sadik Al-Hassan, MP for North Somerset, for an insightful and productive discussion around the transformation needed to support all our young people getting the best start in life.

The conversation focused on the strategic changes required to ensure all SEND pupils receive the support they need to thrive. Key aspects discussed included the enhancement of SEND resources, additional staff training, and improved facilities.

Sadik also took time to meet with Gordano’s SEND team and have a tour of the facilities dedicated to SEND support. He engaged with students from a range of SEND backgrounds, listening to their personal experiences within mainstream education.

PORTISHEAD PRIMARY YEAR SIX VISIT TO WILLIAMS FORMULA 1 TEAM BASE

{item_alt_tag}

At the end of Term 5, Portishead Primary School took their Year 6 to the Williams Formula 1 Team base in Oxfordshire. The day was based in the Williams HQ and started with a morning of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) activities linked to F1 culminating in the children designing, making and testing the most effective nose cone they could for an F1 car. After lunch, the children had a guided tour of the Williams museum, which is full of racing cars and memorabilia, before a session on the e-sport simulators racing around tracks from around the world.

Mr Capel, Year 6 Teacher at Portishead Primary, reflected on how this trip provided many learning points throughout the day: "This heavily STEM focussed school trip was an amazing experience for the children. Whilst the opportunity to try out racing simulators and look at the vehicles was great fun, they learnt about the importance of, and built skills in, team working. They also had access to professional equipment to test out models they built after learning about aerodynamics. As with many school trips, this opportunity is not something pupils would have had outside of school and it really opened their eyes to careers in engineering or technological fields."

There is much excitement from both the children and the adults!

Chinchilla Class at Stanton Drew Primary School have taken part in a 'Dance for Dementia' - raising over £100 for charity. The event was a part of the school's link with a local residential home and 'The Archie Project' which teaches children about dementia. Students have visited the home, spending time chatting with the residents and carrying out simple activities together, helping them to learn about the different types of dementia and ways they can help and support people suffering with this disease.

GORDANO STUDENT SHINES AT HAM FARM FESTIVAL

{item_alt_tag}

Gordano School are incredibly proud to share that Year 9 student Persephone was selected to perform at the prestigious Young Performers’ Spotlight at the Ham Farm Festival

Persephone opened the event with a stunning performance, showcasing not only her musical talent but also her quiet confidence and composure. Her music teacher commended her dedication and preparation:

“Persephone worked incredibly hard in the lead-up to the festival. Her commitment and focus were evident in every rehearsal, and it was wonderful to see her shine on stage.”

Persephone’s musical journey continues to impress, as she has been offered a solo slot at the Impero Lounge during the Portishead Arts Festival ‘ArtPort’ in September. This is a truly remarkable achievement for a Year 9 student and a clear reflection of her growing talent and dedication.

To be given this honour at such a prominent community event is a testament to her talent, hard work, and stage presence. We can’t wait to see her shine once again!
