Ofsted: "Flax Bourton Primary pupils are eager to learn"

Following an inspection in April 2025 Ofsted has graded Flax Bourton CofE Primary School as Good in all areas.

This is the first time the school has been inspected under Section 5 of the Education Act 2005 and was conducted under the new Ofsted framework in which single word judgements for overall effectiveness are no longer awarded.

The inspection identified a successful, happy learning environment, “Pupils enjoy learning at this school. They are eager to learn and play with their friends. The curriculum is ambitious in what it expects pupils to know.”

Inspectors noted the strong personal development of the children as pupils are “courteous and articulate when talking to visitors” and “older pupils learn to be caring and compassionate”. They also praised the school’s outward looking approach, “The school ensures it prepares pupils for life beyond the locality.  Pupils learn about world events and moral issues during assemblies. This helps them to become sympathetic, world citizens.”

Specific strengths were also identified within the Early Years provision at the school, ensuring the children have a strong start to their schooling, “Staff welcome children with open arms and help them to feel comfortable in their new surroundings. Children acquire new learning well as a result”.

Headteacher, Mr Steve Lung, is really pleased with the report’s findings remarking “since joining the school 18 months ago I have worked with our fantastic team, in the school and within our trust, to enhance the curriculum we offer as well as supporting the development and wellbeing of children and staff. I am delighted Ofsted recognised the work we have undertaken so far and the impact this is having.  It is a privilege to lead Flax Bourton Primary and to work with the dedicated staff and brilliant children every day.”

Following the publication of Ofsted’s report, Dr Gary Lewis, Chief Executive of Lighthouse Schools Partnership (LSP) said, “Flax Bourton CofE Primary is a great example of a village school, rooted in its community but looking out at the world. This report describes pupils who are learning well and developing into well-rounded young people. Inspectors also comment on the development and training of staff ensuring it is a great place to work as well as learn. Steve, and his team, should be very proud of this report.”
