St Andrew’s CofE Primary School receives ongoing praise from Ofsted

An Ofsted inspection in June 2025 has confirmed that St Andrew’s Primary School has ‘taken effective action to maintain the standards.’ The most recent inspection was ungraded, so Ofsted’s view from January 2018 when the school was graded good is retained.

The report is full of praise for the school and the learning provision for pupils “The curriculum is ambitious, it is designed to help pupils to build their knowledge over time.” And the strength of vocabulary and reading is recognised, “The school has placed vocabulary development at the heart of learning. Pupils use the vocabulary they have learnt in their writing. There is a sharp focus on reading. Pupils quickly gain the knowledge and skills they need to become confident, fluent readers”.

The school’s support for pupils with Special Educational Needs (SEND) was commended as well “Teachers adapt the curriculum, when necessary, to help pupils with SEND to learn the same curriculum alongside their peers. Skilled staff provide support to pupils in the ‘haven’. Pupils thrive in this calm and purposeful environment.”

Inspectors praised the relationships between school staff and pupils “Staff and pupils forge warm relationships. Pupils are friendly and polite. They enjoy coming to school and they attend well.” They also noted how the children are kind and supportive of each other, “Pupils display the school’s distinctive values, which include ‘trust’ and ‘compassion’. They socialise happily with others at playtimes. Older pupils take their leadership responsibilities seriously. For example, anti-bullying ambassadors support pupils to resolve disagreements harmoniously.”

Respect and responsibility extends to the wider community due to the school’s focus on personal development: “The wider development programme is a strength of the school and worthy of being shared. It is designed to build firm foundations of knowledge and develop pupils’ aspirations. Wider opportunities to prepare pupils to become responsible, respectful and active citizens are carefully mapped out so that all pupils benefit from rich and well-considered experiences. Pupils demonstrate an impressive knowledge of the importance of fundamental British values.”

Headteacher, Fran Martin, was thrilled with the report’s findings, “We are all really proud that Ofsted recognised what a special school St Andrew’s is! I am really pleased that our personal development offer has been acknowledged as a strength. It reflects our nurturing school ethos and the core values that are at the heart of all that we do here. I am really privileged to lead St Andrew’s Primary School and to work alongside such amazing children and our dedicated staff team.”

Following the publication of Ofsted’s report, Dr Gary Lewis, Chief Executive of Lighthouse Schools Partnership (LSP) said, “This Ofsted report highlights what a special school St Andrew’s is. Every time that I visit St Andrew's I am struck by the warmth and inclusivity of the school and I am so pleased that the inspectors saw and felt that too. Well done to all!”
