High Down Schools Governing Body is consulting on reducing its Planned Admission Number (PAN) from 90 to 60 in September 2023. This would mean that the school would admit only two Reception classes from September 2023, instead of the current three.
Eco teams across our three secondary schools Gordano, Backwell and Chew Valley have joined forces in working together towards achieving our target to bring greenhouse gas emissions across the Trust to net zero by 2035.
A meeting was held in November with student representatives from the Environment teams to discuss and share ideas on helping the Environment and plans for the future.
Gordano pupils have been working extremely hard to launch their whole school tree planting project. 140 free trees from the Woodland Trust were planted around the school, providing wildlife with vital habitat and food, and connecting students with the natural world around them. The Eco Team also launched a new student environmental award to encourage and celebrate students environmental awareness and participation.
Backwell pupils ensured their food waste was collected by GENECO and turned into biodiesel, paper is recycled and sourced from sustainable sources and held assemblies on environmental issues. They are working on setting up a second-hand uniform scheme, replacing filament light bulbs with LED, and working towards their Eco-schools Green Flag Award.
Chew Valley School Pupils created travel guidelines for lowering the carbon footprint of all school trips, completed the EduCCate Bronze Award, planted 108 trees, and even appeared on BBC News to highlight their environmental achievements.


Chew Valley School Year 9 pupil, Bluebell Powell, has won a competition to design a technical t-shirt for this year’s Chew Valley 10k and Virtual Chew Valley 10k.

As a result of their on-going commitment to supporting the environment and recycling work, High Down Schools have been awarded the Viridor Cup from Portishead in Bloom for the best school composting initiative.

Over 100 guests attended our Green themed LSP Business Breakfast held this morning at Backwell School. Headteacher, Jon Nunes, opened the breakfast and Gary Lewis, Chief Executive of the Lighthouse Schools Partnership, gave an update on the Trust’s target to become carbon neutral by 2035.
